Belize immigration & customs declaration

How to Fill the Belize Declaration Step by Step

Follow the Belize travel declaration from preparation to QR code: documents to gather, personal and flight details, the customs half, final review and submission.

13 min read

Completing the Belize online immigration and customs declaration takes about fifteen minutes if your documents are in front of you and considerably longer if they are not. This guide walks through the step-by-step process, from gathering paperwork to saving the QR code that officers scan on arrival.

The short version: gather your passport, tickets and accommodation booking, open the official portal within the 72 hours before arrival, choose arrival or departure, copy your details exactly as printed, answer the customs questions honestly, check everything twice and save the QR code you receive.

Step 1: get everything in front of you first

Almost every mistake in this form comes from typing while hunting for a document. Before you open the portal, collect:

  • Your passport, open at the photo page — not a photocopy or a photo on your phone.
  • Your flight confirmation, or the details of the land or sea crossing you plan to use.
  • Your onward or return ticket, since the form asks how long you intend to stay.
  • The address of your first night's accommodation: hotel, guesthouse, resort on Ambergris Caye, or a private address if you are staying with someone.
  • A clear mental list of what you are carrying: currency, gifts, food, equipment.

Filing for a family means repeating the passport step for each traveller, always reading from the document and never from memory. See our Belize declaration requirements for the full checklist.

In brief: ten minutes of gathering documents saves half an hour of corrections later.

Step 2: reach the official portal

The declaration is filed at belizetravel.immigration.gov.bz, the official government portal. Type the address directly rather than trusting a search result, and check the address bar before entering anything.

Two habits worth adopting: use a stable connection, since a dropout mid-form is the most common cause of lost work, and prefer a laptop or tablet if you have one — everything works on a phone, but a passport number is easier to check on a larger screen.

In brief: go straight to the official portal, on a stable connection, and verify the URL.

Step 3: choose arrival or departure

The system handles both directions of travel, and the first meaningful choice is which declaration you are making. An arrival declaration covers your entry into Belize; a departure declaration covers your exit. Two rules keep this simple:

  1. Each journey needs its own declaration. The one you filed before flying in does not cover your flight home.
  2. Each declaration is filed within its own 72-hour window, counted against that crossing.

Picking the wrong direction is easy to spot: the questions that follow will not match your trip. If that happens, go back rather than pushing on.

In brief: decide first whether you are declaring an arrival or a departure.

Step 4: personal and passport details, exactly as printed

This is where accuracy matters most, because the data is compared directly against the document in the officer's hand. Copy from the passport, character by character:

  • Given names and surnames in the order and spelling of the data page, second surnames and hyphens included.
  • Passport number, checking the characters that are easily confused: 0 and O, 1 and I, 5 and S, 8 and B.
  • Date of birth, watching the date format the form uses.
  • Nationality and country of issue, which are not always the same thing.
  • Expiry date: if it falls within six months of the trip, sort the passport out first.

Do not tidy anything up. If the passport spells your name without an accent or with your surnames joined, the declaration must say the same. A version that is "more correct" than the passport is still a mismatch.

Good to know: dual nationals should declare the passport they will actually present at the Belize border, and use that same passport at check-in. Mixing two documents across one journey reliably creates questions you do not want.

In brief: transcribe the passport exactly as printed, oddities included.

Step 5: how you are arriving

For air arrivals, give the airline and flight number of the final leg into the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, plus the date. Only the last leg matters: a traveller flying London to Miami to Belize City declares the Miami to Belize City flight.

For land arrivals, you identify the crossing instead: the border post at Santa Elena coming from Chetumal in Mexico, or Benque Viejo del Carmen coming from Melchor de Mencos in Guatemala. For sea arrivals, the port and vessel take the place of the flight.

Expect questions too about the purpose of your trip and the length of your stay. Keep both consistent with your onward ticket; saying "two weeks" while holding a ticket dated three weeks later is exactly the inconsistency that slows a border check.

In brief: declare the final leg or border post, and keep the stay consistent with your ticket.

Step 6: where you are staying

The form asks where you will be during your visit. Have the booking open and give the accommodation as it appears there: the establishment's name and address, in the district or caye where it sits. Practical notes for a country where addresses are informal:

  • Belize has few street numbers outside Belize City. A hotel name plus town or caye is normal.
  • On Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, the resort or guesthouse name is the address.
  • If you are moving around, the first night is the one the form is asking about.
  • No booking yet? Make one before filing. Guessing here is a bad idea.

In brief: give a real, checkable address for your first night, taken from the booking.

Step 7: the customs half

Because Belize merged its two old forms into one, you also make a customs declaration in the same sitting. This half asks about categories of goods the authorities want to know about:

  • Currency above the reporting threshold, counting cash carried by the whole family.
  • Food, plants, seeds and animal products, which are controlled for biosecurity reasons.
  • Commercial goods and samples, as opposed to personal effects.
  • Alcohol and tobacco beyond personal allowances.
  • Weapons, ammunition and other restricted items.

Answer honestly. Declaring something usually means a brief conversation, and sometimes duty. Not declaring something later found is a different matter, with consequences that can include seizure and fines. If you are unsure whether an item counts, our guide to Belize customs and what you can bring sets out the categories, and the official portal is the authority on current thresholds.

Good to know: allowances and reporting thresholds are set by the Belize authorities and change over time. Treat any figure from a travel blog, ours included, as an order of magnitude and confirm the current limits on the official portal.

In brief: the customs section carries real legal weight — declare rather than guess.

The declaration section by section

The form is presented in blocks. Labels and order are set by the portal and can change, so treat this as a map of the ground covered, not a screen-by-screen script.

Block What it covers Have ready
Direction of travel Whether you are arriving in or departing from Belize Your itinerary
Traveller identity Names, date of birth, nationality Passport data page
Travel document Passport number, issue and expiry, country of issue Passport data page
Contact details Email and phone for the confirmation An inbox you can open abroad
Journey details Flight, vessel or land border post, and date Booking confirmation
Purpose and duration Reason for the visit and length of stay Onward or return ticket
Accommodation Where you will be staying in Belize Hotel or host address
Customs questions Goods, currency and restricted items Your packing list
Declaration and consent Confirming the information is true Five minutes of attention
Confirmation Submission receipt and QR code Somewhere to save it

In brief: identity, journey, accommodation and customs, followed by a confirmation screen — that is the whole shape of the form.

Prefer to hand it over? We are an independent paid assistance service, not the Belize government. We check every field against your documents, submit the declaration and return the confirmation with its QR code. The official portal still has no cost and open to everyone. Start your application.

Step 8: review, submit and save the QR code

Do not skip this. Spend three minutes on a deliberate check:

  1. Passport number — read it aloud from the document while looking at the screen.
  2. Names — spelled and ordered as on the data page.
  3. Dates — birth, expiry and arrival, in the format the form uses.
  4. Flight or border post — the final leg into Belize, on the right day.
  5. Accommodation — name and location that match your booking.
  6. Customs answers — reread them once you have mentally repacked your bag.
  7. Email address — a typo here means the confirmation never arrives.

For a family, run the same check per traveller: copy-and-paste errors between siblings' records are common and easy to miss. The most frequent Belize declaration mistakes are all caught by that list.

Once the list is clean, confirm that the information is true and submit. The system returns a confirmation with a QR code, the working document for your border check. Save it properly:

  • Take a screenshot and keep it in your phone's favourites album.
  • Print a paper copy and fold it inside your passport.
  • Forward the confirmation to a travelling companion as a third backup.
  • Label the files if several people are travelling — matching each code to its owner at the desk is otherwise slow.

The Belize declaration QR code does not replace your passport; it retrieves what you filed.

In brief: review for three minutes, submit, and store the QR code in at least two places, one of them on paper.

If something goes wrong

Portals have bad days. A calm approach beats twenty resubmissions.

  • The confirmation never arrived. Check spam, then confirm the email address you entered before assuming the submission failed.
  • You spotted an error after submitting. Check the portal for how to correct or resubmit. Do not overwrite the problem by filing a second, contradictory declaration on impulse.
  • Your flight changed. The declaration should reflect the journey you actually make; sort it out before you reach the border, not in the queue.
  • The site will not accept your submission. Confirm you are inside the 72-hour window — filing too early is the usual explanation.
  • You are at the airport with nothing. Complete it there if you can, expect delay, and tell the check-in agent rather than hoping nobody asks.

In brief: diagnose before you resubmit, and fix problems before you reach the border.

FAQ about completing the Belize declaration

How long does the form take?

About fifteen minutes for one traveller with documents to hand. A family of four takes longer, since each passport is transcribed and checked separately.

Can I fill it in for my whole family?

Yes. One adult normally completes them for the household, but every traveller needs their own record with their own passport details, including children.

What if I do not know my flight number yet?

Then you are too early. The declaration opens in the 72 hours before arrival, by which point the booking shows the flight number for the final leg into Belize.

Which flight do I declare if I have a connection?

The last leg into Belize. A journey from Madrid via Miami is declared as the Miami to Belize City flight, on the date it lands.

What do I put for accommodation if I am island-hopping?

The place you will sleep on your first night. If you move on to Caye Caulker or San Ignacio afterwards, that does not change the answer to this question.

What if I have not booked a hotel?

Book at least the first night before filing. The form asks for a checkable address, and inventing one creates a problem at exactly the wrong moment.

Do I have to declare cash I am carrying?

Amounts above the official reporting threshold must be declared, counting what the whole travelling party carries. Confirm the current threshold on the official portal rather than relying on a figure from a forum.

Can I edit the declaration after submitting it?

Check the portal for the correction procedure. Do not file a second declaration contradicting the first: two conflicting records are worse than one imperfect one.

Does everyone in a group need their own QR code?

Each traveller's declaration produces its own confirmation. Keep them organised and labelled so the right code is shown for the right person at the desk.

What happens if the customs answers are wrong?

An inaccurate customs declaration is a formal problem, not a clerical one, and can lead to inspection, seizure or fines. Declaring an item usually costs you a short conversation, and sometimes duty.
